Did you ever have a friend or colleague – maybe even a celebrity – who seemed to effortlessly “have it all”? Did you find yourself admiring her so much -- the healthy lifestyle, the attractive figure, the loving partner – and thinking you wanted to be just like her?
We all have at some point, right? It’s only human to choose role models, and in our media-focused culture, the surface level of fitness is often prioritized over the more important reasons to eat right and exercise.
But don’t forget, these role models are just people, after all. Even your group training instructor. Even that movie star turned fitness entrepreneur.
Everyone makes mistakes.
Everyone stays up nights worrying sometimes.
Everyone wonders if they’re good enough.
So, I try to avoid focusing too much on comparing myself to anyone else and follow my own principles of healthy living that are aligned to the person I want to be. I know what they are – and so do you. We need to move our bodies, consume a balanced diet, manage our stress, and get enough sleep. It’s really not that complicated, and it’s not going to change anytime soon.
Look, I’m not saying we shouldn’t admire others or learn from them. But if you stick to the basic truths, you’ll find they never let you down.
